- Approximately 25000 species
- Incredibly diverse
- Practically no fossil record
- First animals to have organ system organization and cephalization (differentiation of heads).

Defining Characteristics
- Bilaterally symmetrical, unsegmented, bodies, with a definite polarity of head (anterior) and tail (posterior) ends
- Dorsoventrally flattened, leaf like or tapelike
- Flatworms are triploblastic, have three germ layers
- Acoelomate - Lack a coelom, or don’t have a body cavity.
- DO have a cephalized nervous system as well as a digestive, excretory, nervous and reproductive systems
- Can be free living, parasitic or commensal.
- Excretion and osmoregulation by “flame cells” found in protonephridia (can be absent in some)
- Absorption through diffusion, through the body wall.
- Same pharyngeal opening that takes in food also excretes waste.
